About

Martijn van Sas (1994) is a Belgian classical pianist specializing in art song accompaniment. His musical journey began at the Art School in Brussels and continued at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent, where he earned his master’s degree with high distinction under the guidance of Vitaly Samoshko. He further honed his skills with a postgraduate degree in song accompaniment at the prestigious Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Vienna, studying with Professor Charles Spencer.

Martijn has demonstrated his talent in international competitions, winning the award for Best Pianist during the Song Art Masterclasses in Husum in 2019 and 2021. He was also a finalist in renowned competitions, including the Schubert Song Competition in Dortmund (2023) and the Hugo Wolf Competition in Stuttgart (2024), both in collaboration with soprano Anna Sophia Theil.

Martijn’s development as a pianist was enriched by participating in the Udo Reinemann International Masterclasses at La Monnaie in 2019-2020 with soprano Franches Dhont, as well as through masterclasses with distinguished artists such as Markus Hadulla, Martin Hughes, Polina Leschenko, Hans Ryckelinck, Christine Schäfer, Malcolm Martineau, Joseph Middleton, David Kuyken, and Ulf Bästlein. As a performing artist, Martijn has appeared in various prestigious concert series and venues, including Arte Amanti, Im Zentrum Lied in Cologne, Vrienden van het Lied in the Netherlands (together with baritone Artur Rożek), the Miry Piano Series, and the Schlosstheater Schönbrunn in Vienna. His playing is characterized by refined musicality and profound sensitivity to text and poetry, making him a sought-after partner for art song performances.

In addition to his concert activities, Martijn is affiliated with the Art School in Brussels and the Academy of Zottegem, and is currently pursuing his studies as a répétiteur at the Opera Academy in Ghent (IOA).
